Glossary

  • Blu-ray device — Blu-ray Disc (also known as BD or Blu-ray) is an optical disc storage media designed to supersede the standard DVD format.
  • Virtual drive — A virtual drive in computing is a device that to the operating system appears to be an ordinary physical disc drive. Such devices are added to the operating system with special software called a disc emulator.
  • CD/DVD emulation — Virtual CD/DVD disc drive creation which imitates the real one through the special SOFTWARE. CD/DVD disc image files are used as real CD/DVD discs for such virtual CD/DVD drives.
  • Disc image — A disk image is a single file or storage device containing the complete contents and structure representing a data storage medium or device, such as a hard drive, tape drives, floppy disk, CD/DVD/BD and key drive, although an image of an optical disc may be referred to as an optical disc image.
  • SPTD driver — SCSI Pass Through Direct (usually abbreviated as SPTD, filename "sptd.sys") is a device driver developed by Duplex Secure Ltd. that provides a new method of access to storage devices. Is used for work with virtual drives in DAEMON Tools.
  • Virtual SCSI adapter — SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) it is a standard of connecting of peripheral units by the special board — SCSI-adapter. Virtual realization of hardware SCSI adapter intended for connecting of virtual CD/DVD devices in case of use of emulator (such as DAEMON Tools).
  • Image format — Disc image file formats are standardized means of organizing and storing images of CD/DVD discs. Usually, disc image format is standardized and developed for some specific software. Nevertheless, many programs support different image formats from another disc emulating software.
  • Image converting — Source image file saving into another specified image format using Image Converter (this functionality is available in DAEMON Tools Pro Advanced).
  • Image mounting — CD/DVD disc image file connecting to a virtual CD/DVD drive. It’s complete analogy of real CD/DVD disc loading to physical CD/DVD drive.
  • Image unmounting — CD/DVD disc image file disconnecting from virtual CD/DVD drive. It’s complete analogy of real CD/DVD disc extracting from physical CD/DVD drive.
  • Image creation — Copying all content and structure of file system and data from CD/DVD disc to the file (sometimes into several files) called image file to save it to the hard drive or another media.
  • CD/DVD drives emulator — Software which allows to add virtual CD/DVD drive to the operating system. Such virtual drive emulates physical CD/DVD drive work and looks like real device for the operating system.
  • Emulation — Reproducing of software or device behavior using other software or hardware methods, or software and hardware combination methods. The main goal is an exact modeling of imitated system status and behavior. For example, software emulation of hardware device which is intended to read optical CD/DVD discs.
  • Image catalog — The part of DAEMON Tools software functionality for organizing of CD/DVD disc images library.
  • DAEMON Tools Gadget — A lightweight application that is intended to access general program features right from your desktop (without opening DAEMON Tools).
  • DAEMON Tools Toolbar — Browser Toolbar DAEMON Tools will be installed to Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers according to user defined options in DAEMON Tools installation wizard.
  • mdx / mds (Media Data eXtended / Media Descriptor Files) — these formats are developed by DAEMON Tools developers. Other formats are used in another CD/DVD emulating software. DAEMON Tools supports all listed here formats.
  • RMPS — DPM can be observed and subsequently encoded into a Recordable Media Physical Signature(RMPS). In concert with emulation software, RMPS can reproduce the effects of DPM for backup copies of CD/DVD media. This technique was invented by DAEMON Tools, for which it created the mdx / mds file formats.
  • Virtual Bus driver — driver for basic emulation of devices. Provides CD/DVD/Blu-ray drives emulation and it aims to help you to avoid many compatibility issues with other software (especially with security software).
